Community

The Southern Maryland Association of REALTORS® believe it's extremely important to give back to our community where we live, work, and play.  We do that through quiet a few intiatives:

Bras & Drawers for the Cause

Beginning in 2014, SMAR’s Community Relations Committee has organized a fundraiser benefiting a local charity which helps with monetary burdens of those suffering with cancer.  We thank all who participate and support such a beneficial cause.  [more info]

C.A.R.E. Award

The C.A.R.E. “Community Action and REALTOR® Excellence” Award is given annually by the Maryland Association of REALTORS® to Local Boards/Associations to recognize achievements in community service and charitable actions. The award is designed to raise the profile of REALTORS®, to recognize the contributions REALTORS® make in their communities in terms of volunteer hours and money raised, and to offset the perception that REALTORS® are only concerned with the business transactions of buying and selling homes.

SMAR has won 9 times since 2002.  The prize money is distributed among charities in Calvert, Charles & St. Mary's Counties which have included but not limited too: Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, Meals on Wheels for Calvert, Charles & St. Mary’s, Fortitude Housing of Southern MD; Animal Shelters for Calvert, Charles & St. Mary’s, Pajama Connection, and Project Linus.

Food Drive

SMAR collects food year-round to donate to food banks in our tri-county area by our Community Relations Committee.  What to donate: Canned and dry foods in boxes or bags such as cereals, spaghetti sauce, pasta, macaroni and cheese, etc. Canned food should be the standard size 14 ½ oz – 24 oz. not the commercial sizes. At BJs or Sam’s consider picking up a case. And, why not get in the habit of bringing a can or box along to SMAR when you’re there for a meeting or class?  This need is ongoing, so any time and every time will help a great deal!

Secret Santa for Seniors

Several years ago, the Community Relations & CARE Award Committee identified a growing group of people in the Southern Maryland region that needed our assistance to brighten their holidays.  There are many residents in our regional nursing homes and centers who do not have family or regular visitors throughout the year and receive no gifts or special attention at Christmas time.  We decided it was time to create a massive Secret Santa campaign to provide holiday gifts to those less fortunate living in our tri-county area.  Information is sent out each November to the membership and is posted on our Facebook page.

Senior’s Holiday Brightened by REALTORS®

(Hughesville, MD) – The Southern Maryland Association of REALTORS® (SMAR) wrapped up its annual Secret Santa for Seniors project last week. These seniors receive little or no visitors throughout the year. “Wish lists” are obtained by members of SMAR’s Community Relations Committee by working directly with representatives from local nursing facilities. Some items requested include CD’s, books, jewelry, winter clothing and of course chocolate! 2018 Chair of the Community Relations Committee, Theresa Leonard, said “The Committee works hard each year to sort gifts to make sure no one is left out. Gifts were delivered for 171 residents at 8 locations in the Tri-County area. The participation by generous SMAR members and friends made this possible. Thank you to everyone who helped.”

The Southern Maryland Association of REALTORS® is a trade organization dedicated to serving its members and the wider Southern Maryland community. We advocate for private property rights and ensure the high ethical and professional standards established by the National Association of REALTORS® are adhered to by our members.
